You follow Me: Mary and unconditional following

Tu me sequere: Maria e o seguimento sem condições

A Mariologia do “Tu me sequere”

Introdução:

The invitation of Jesus to Peter, “Will you follow me?” (Jn 21,22), represents the core of Marian spirituality. This text reveals the essence of Mary’s “fiat” and the model she offers for all Christian following.

I. O Epílogo de João: Restauração e Missão:

The chapter 21 of John narrates the appearance of the Risen One on the shores of Lake Tiberias, the miraculous catch of fish, the recognition of Jesus, the meal, and the dialogue with Peter. Here, Jesus restores Peter after his denial, giving him a new pastoral mandate: “Feed my sheep” (Jn 21,15-17). This chapter symbolizes the paschal reparation of Peter’s weakness, transforming him into a faithful shepherd.

II. Maria e o “Tu me sequere” da Anunciação:

The response of Mary to the angel’s announcement (“Let it be done to me according to your word,” Lk 1,38) is the first example of “You follow me?” in the history of salvation. Mary’s “fiat” is an act of radical obedience and trust, without conditions and without pre-established guarantees. It is the model for all Christian following that demands a free and total response to God.

III. O Seguimento Sem Comparação:

The phrase of Jesus to Peter, “What is that to you? You follow Me” (Jn 21,22), highlights the personal nature of the calling. Each following is unique, shaped by God’s specific will for each individual. Comparison with others has no place; the “you” in “You follow Me” is irreplaceable and demands total surrender.

IV. Seguir e Servir:

The pastoral mandate given to Peter, “Feed my sheep,” is intrinsically linked to the act of following Jesus. Whoever follows Jesus also serves others. Mary, through her “fiat” and her spiritual motherhood, is the supreme model of this union between following and serving.

Conclusão:

Mary, who said “You follow me” at the Annunciation, embodies the ideal of unconditional discipleship. Her life, from her “fiat” to her intercession for believers, demonstrates the beauty of faithful following of Christ. Through her, we learn to respond to the divine call with our whole being, without seeking guarantees or comparisons, and to serve others as an expression of our love for Jesus.
