Saint Justin Martyr and Mary: The Parallel of Eve-Mary in 2nd Century Apologetics

podcast da Mariologia — primeiro episódio, ciência teológica

Saint Justin Martyr, the first to explicitly formulate the parallel between Eve and Mary in Christian literature. In the sixth episode of the Mariology Podcast, Professor Daniel Afonso analyzes the life and works of this saint, highlighting his mariological contribution in the Dialogue with Trypho: Mary as the New Eve, obedient where the first disobeyed, fruitful for salvation where the other brought death.

Quem é São Justino Mártir?

Saint Justin Martyr was born in Flavia Neapolis (present-day Nablus, in Palestine) around the year 100. A philosopher by training, he explored various philosophical schools: Stoicism, Pythagoreanism, Platonism, before converting to Christianity. After his conversion, he continued wearing the mantle of the philosopher, convinced that Christianity was the true philosophy. He died martyred in Rome around 165, during the reign of Marcus Aurelius.

As Obras de São Justino Mártir: Apologia e Diálogo

The preserved works of Saint Justin Martyr include the First Apology (addressed to Emperor Antoninus Pius), the Second Apology (to the Roman Senate) and the Dialogue with Trypho (an apology addressed to the Jews). The First Apology defends Christians against accusations of atheism and immorality. The Dialogue with Trypho, however, is notable for its more developed mariological references.

O Logos: Cristo como Razão e Verdade Universal

The theology of the Logos is central in the reflection of Saint Justin Martyr. For him, the Logos, the Word, the divine Verbo, did not begin to exist in Bethlehem; it existed from eternity as a principle of reason and truth. Everything that the pagan philosophers said that was true was said thanks to a participation in this seminal Logos (logos spermatikos). With the Incarnation, the eternal Logos enters human history, being born of Mary.

O Paralelo Eva-Maria em São Justino Mártir

The parallel between Eve and Mary, developed in the Dialogue with Trypho, is the most original contribution of Saint Justin to Mariology. The structure is a diptych: Eve, virgin and intact, received the word of the serpent and gave birth to disobedience and death; Mary, virgin and intact, received the word of the angel and gave birth to obedience and life. This parallel shows that Mary is not an accidental figure in the history of salvation but the point of feminine recapitulation of fallen humanity.

A História da Humanidade como Escolha entre Cristo e o Adversário

Saint Justin Martyr proposes a vision of human history structured by a fundamental choice: for or against Christ. This perspective is not his invention but is rooted in the evangelical tradition. Justin, however, gives it a precise philosophical formulation. Humanity divides between those who follow the Logos and those who reject it. Mary uniquely belongs to the first group, being the first to say yes to the incarnate Logos, the first disciple, the perfect model of adherence to Christ.

These axes will continue to structure the reflection on Mary for centuries. For a deeper understanding of this journey, access the Mariology Course from Locus Mariologicus.
