The Spirit itself demands for us: Mary in the vigil of the Spirit

A Oração do Espírito em Maria: Um Modelo para a Vigília de Pentecostes
Introdução:
This text explores the deep connection between Mary’s experience in the Upper Room, her “groaning” prayer for the promised Spirit, and the paschal vigil of Pentecost. It argues that Mary, through her faith and persevering prayer, offers a model for the Church’s prayer as it awaits the gift of the Holy Spirit.
I. O Espírito Intercede com Gemidos Inefáveis (Rm 8,26):
The passage from Romans 8:26 is highlighted as central: “we do not know how to pray as we ought” (RM 8:26). Paul, despite being one of the greatest theologians in history, acknowledges human limitation in prayer. The Spirit, instead of formulating specific requests, intercedes “with groanings too deep for words,” expressing the fundamental desire of the human heart for communion with God.
This concept of “sub-linguistic” prayer is explored, highlighting that the deepest form of prayer is not limited to words but expresses a profound spiritual longing. Both Eastern and Western Christian contemplative traditions recognize this wordless prayer as the pinnacle of the prayer life.
II. Maria no Cenáculo: Vigília e Intercessão:
Mary is presented as the supreme model of this “ineffable” prayer. In the Cenacle, she and the apostles awaited the Holy Spirit for ten days in vigilant prayer. Her calm presence and her perseverance in prayer sustained the community while they waited for the divine gift.
The comparison between the vigil of the Cenacle and the practice of prayer vigil in the modern Church is made, highlighting the role of Mary as spiritual guide.
III. Intercessão Conformada à Vontade de Deus (Rm 8,27):
The text explores the distinction between what seems good to us and what is good “according to God.” The prayer of the Spirit, described in Rom 8,27, is that which aligns with divine will. Mary, through her “fiat,” exemplifies this prayer conformed to the will of God, surrendering herself completely to the Father’s will.
IV. A Vigília de Pentecostes: Espera e Preparação:
The Paschal Vigil of Pentecost is seen as the culminating moment of prayerful waiting. Just as the apostles in the Cenacle, the Church gathers in prayer to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Mary, present in every sacrament, continues to intercede for us, guiding us on our spiritual journey.
Conclusão:
The text concludes that Mary, through her unique experience in the Cenacle and her life of contemplative prayer, offers a powerful model for the paschal vigil and for the entire prayer life of the Church. Her “ineffable” intercession helps us to draw near to the Holy Spirit and to live in communion with God.
