Church and Mary: the mother and the body of Christ

Church and Mary: Mother and Body of Christ
The Relationship Between the Church and Mary
The connection between the Church and Mary is one of the central themes in post-conciliar Marian theology. Vatican II incorporated Mary into Chapter VIII of the document *Lumen Gentium* (on the Church), emphasizing that she is a “preeminent member” and “type” of the Church. Mary serves as a type (model, figure) of the Church in three ways:1. Virgin: The Church receives the Word with pure faith, as Mary did when she received the message from the Angel. 2. Mother: The Church bears children to God, just as Mary gave birth to the Son of God. 3. Spouse: The Church lives in a love alliance with Christ, similar to Mary’s complete dedication to her Son.Mother of the Church
At the conclusion of Vatican II (November 21, 1964), Pope Paul VI proclaimed Mary “Mother of the Church.” This title, not present in the conciliar text (added by the Pope), encapsulates Mary’s maternal relationship with all members of the Body of Christ. Francis confirmed this title on the liturgical feast of “Mary, Mother of the Church,” celebrated on the Monday after Pentecost.Deepen your studies: Explore [Mariology](/), [Marian Theology](/), [Marian Apparitions](/), and [Post-Graduate Studies in Mariology](/).—Church Magisterium
