Faith of Mary: The Path of the Faithful

The faith of Mary is one of the most contemplated topics in contemporary Marian theology. Elizabeth proclaimed Mary “blessed because she believed” (Luke 1:45), and this title encapsulates her entire spirituality. For a complete article, see: Fe de Maria: From the Announcement to the Cross.

Faith as Obedience

Mary’s faith is primarily a response of obedience: she believed before understanding, trusted before seeing. The “Fiat” of the Annunciation was pronounced in the darkness. Mary did not know what would follow. This sightless faith is the Pauline model of all Christian faith: “walk by faith, not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7).

The Night of Faith

John Paul II, in Redemptoris Mater (1987), described Mary’s faith as a “night of faith”: moments of misunderstanding, of God’s silence, of suffering with no apparent response. On the Cross, when all seemed over, Mary remained. This faithfulness in the darkness makes her a model for all those going through spiritual crises.

First in Order of Faith

The Second Vatican Council (LG 63) calls Mary “preeminent and uniquely significant member of the Church”: she is the first faithful. Her faith preceded, accompanied, and succeeded Jesus’ mission. It is the most perfect faith in human history, not because she received special revelations, but because she loved and obeyed with a completely pure heart.Deepen your studies: Explore Mariology, Marian Theology, Marian Apparitions, and Post-Graduate Studies in Mariology.—
