Texto Latino Original, n. 41-42: Maria, Imago Caritatis
n. 41: Mary, the Virgin, Mother of God and Mother of the Church, is Christ’s most perfect disciple. In the mysteries of joy, suffering, and glory, she participated intimately and deeply in the life of her Son, thus becoming the supreme example of charity: a charity that gives, serves, adheres even unto death and beyond it.
n. 42: Mary, as she saw in Cana, perceives the needs of men and intercedes with the Son. In this mystery of Cana, the fundamental structure of charity is revealed: to see, to ask, to give. Mary saw that the wine was lacking, asked the Son, Jesus gave. This is Mary’s charity: a charity that observes, intercedes, and obtains.
Tradução e Interpretação:
Pope Benedict XVI portrays Mary as the perfect model of Christian charity defended in the Encyclical. According to him, Mary’s charity is a fusion of love for God (eros transformed into agape) and love for neighbor (service, care, intercession), reflecting the nature of Christ. The Pope uses the image of Cana to illustrate Mary’s intercessory charity: she acts proactively, seeing needs without waiting to be asked. This “proactive mercy” of Mary serves as a model for the Church’s charity in the world.
