The Holy Virgin Mary in the Cenacle: Dogmatic-liturgical analysis

The presence of Mary in the Cenacle is one of the most significant texts in biblical mariology. Luke affirms that Mary remained in prayer with the Apostles (Acts 1,14), thus becoming the praying mother of the emerging Church and the model for all ecclesial life.
Análise Dogmático-Litúrgica
In the Pentecostal Cenacle, the disciples are filled by the Holy Spirit promised by Jesus during the Paschal Meal in the same place. In this Mass, Mary is celebrated as:
- Virgem cheia do Espírito.
- Modelo da Igreja orante.
- Exemplo de harmonia, comunhão e paz.
- Portadora de docilidade à voz do Espírito.
- Vigilante na espera da volta do Senhor.
The term ‘Cenacle’ does not appear in any biblical text. It refers to the location of Jesus’ Last Supper with the disciples, a large upper room in a house decorated with carpets (Mk 14,15; Lk 22,12).
O Cenáculo e a Igreja Nascente
In the Cenacle, we find again those who were with Jesus from the beginning: the apostles, some faithful disciples like José, called Barsabás, and Matias (Acts 2,23), a group of relatives, women, and Mary, mother of Jesus. These were witnesses of the final supper, of Jesus’ ascension to heaven, and of his seat at the right hand of God (Mk 16,19; Lk 24,51; Acts 1,9).
The Cenacle represents the historical space of the early Church and a symbol of all future ecclesial life. Mary, present from the conception in Nazareth to the cross of Calvary, stands out for her unconditional maternal love and her growing faith and trust. She is the model of the Church in the Cenacle, welcoming the Word made flesh and available to the Holy Spirit.
Maria no Cenáculo e a Comunidade Cristã
Maria takes part in the restoration of Jesus’ community: a community united in faith and steadfast in prayer, shaping the new Kingdom. In the Upper Room, Jesus is with the disciples in new ways:
- Ele os torna perfeitos na unidade (Jo 17,20).
- Está presente entre eles, onde dois ou três estão reunidos em seu nome (Mt 18,20).
- Espera por seu retorno, como eles (Atos 1,11).
In the Cenacle, there is no isolated protagonist; all share the fraternal discipleship, offering their faith, hope, and charity to the new Kingdom. Mary, in the Cenacle, is the hermeneutical key of the Church in prayer and waiting for the Holy Spirit.
