São Miguel Arcanjo: quem é e a oração de Leão XIII

Saint Michael the Archangel is the prince of the celestial militia and the great defender of the People of God against evil. His name, from Hebrew Mikha-El, means “Who is like God?“, the cry that opposes Satan’s pride. He is one of the central figures in Catholic angelology. This guide introduces his figure and devotion.

Who is Saint Michael?

Saint Michael appears in Scripture as the defender of the people (Daniel 10:13; 12:1), as he who disputes with the devil (Jude 9), and especially in the Apocalypse: “There was a battle in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon” (Revelation 12:7). He is traditionally venerated as the chief of the celestial armies and protector of the Church.

The Prayer to Saint Michael

Pope Leo XIII composed, at the end of the 19th century, the famous Prayer to Saint Michael the Archangel (“Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle…”), asking for protection against the forces of evil. Pope Francis has recommended its recitation on several occasions.

The Feast of the Archangels

Saint Michael is celebrated on September 29, along with the archangels Gabriel (the messenger of the Announcement) and Raphael (Tobias’ guide). He is also the patron saint of soldiers, police officers, and a good death.
