The encyclical Christi Matri Rosarii, published on September 15, 1966, is the second Marian letter of Pope Paul VI. Specifically dedicated to promoting peace in Vietnam through the Rosary, it was issued on the feast of Our Lady of Sorrows and addressed to the entire Church. Christi Matri Rosarii sacrum mensem Octobrem proxime ineuntem proximum esse cernimus. Aeris turbines undique nos circumstant, atque pacis et concordiae spes nondum reddita est. Hoc graviore in periculo, ad Christi Matrem confugimus, ad eam quam totus orbis Christianus appellat «Reginam pacis», eamque deprecamur ut populis omnibus pacem largiri dignetur.

Paul VI had already published the Mense Maio in 1965, asking for prayers for Vietnam. One year later, as the war intensified, he appealed once more to Mary, Queen of Peace, through this new encyclical.

The Most Blessed Virgin Mary, while the Rosary is recited, leads the hearts of men to inner peace and mutual fraternity. For in that contemplation of the mysteries of joy, sorrow, and glory, the faithful are educated to feel with Christ, and through Christ with other men, who are brothers in Christ.
