Mary Queen: The Title of Marian Reign

Introduction

The title Maria Rainha (Mary Queen) expresses Mary’s heavenly dignity, glorified at the right hand of her Son. Pope Pius XII, in his encyclical *Ad Caeli Reginam* (1954), provided theological underpinnings for this title and established the feast day of Our Lady Queen (August 22). Biblical Foundation

The biblical root of Mary’s reign lies in the figure of *Gebirah* (Queen-Mother) from the Old Testament. The mother of the king in Israel held an official position at court, seated to the right of her son. Mary, Mother of the Messiah King, inherits this title. Psalm 45 proclaims: “The queen is at thy right hand, adorned with gold of Ophir.”

Reign by Association

Mary’s reign is a consequence of Christ’s reign; she is Queen because she is the Mother of the King. It is not a conquered reign but one received. This distinction is crucial: Mary does not share Christ’s power by right but receives it as a grace and an association to her Son who reigns over all things.

Queen at Service

Mariological tradition emphasizes that Mary’s reign is not triumphalistic but servile. She is Queen-Servant, following the example of her Son who came to serve. The *Salve Regina* addresses her as “our Queen and Mother of mercy,” a queen whose authority is exercised through compassion and intercession.Explore further: Mariology, Marian Theology, Marian Apparitions, and Graduate Studies in Mariology.
