The Magisterium and Mary: The Major Marian Documents

The Magisterium of the Church has produced a vast and rich corpus of doctrine regarding Mary. From the dogmatic definitions of the Ecumenical Councils to the modern Papal encyclicals, the official reflection of the Church on Mary has been constant and progressive.
Ecumenical Councils
Major milestones:
– Ephesus (431) defines Mary as Theotokos.
– Calcedonia (451) confirms the title Theotokos.
– Latrans (649) defines perpetual virginity.
– Vatican II (1964) in Lumen Gentium (Chapter VIII), integrates Mary into the ecclesiology.
Papal Dogmas and Marian Documents
Two Popes defined dogmas marianos: Pius IX in 1854, defined the Immaculate Conception in the bull Ineffabilis Deus. Pius XII in 1950, defined the Assumption in the Constitution Munificentissimus Deus. Both definitions followed extensive consultation throughout the Church.
