Mariology Podcast: Science, Method, and Three Central Arguments

Podcast on Mariology: A Theological Journey in Search of Mariological Knowledge IntroductionThe Mariology podcast emerges as a service to the Portuguese-speaking Church, responding to an increasingly felt need: the lack of quality, rigorous, and accessible Mariological content in Portuguese. In this first episode, Professor Daniel Afonso introduces himself, shares his journey that led him to Mariology, and establishes the foundations of this discipline as a theological science with its own method and object. The invitation is clear: Mariology is not merely academic curiosity or devotion without substance, but knowledge of faith that enriches all Christian life.A Vocation That Begins at the AltarDaniel Afonso grew up near the Monastery of São Gonçalo in Amarante. From childhood, he participated in Masses, presided over the Rosary in May, and received a silver rosary at ten years old. He recalls with affection: “I am happy and content praying the Hail Marys with the rest of the people who gathered in the month of May.” This devotional grounding preceded all his academic training and shaped the theological sensitivity that would guide his Mariological investigation. The Mariology Podcast is thus the fruit of a vocation that begins long before the classrooms, in prayer and the simple service of an acolyte who discovered in Mary the safest path to Christ. This affective bond with the Virgin is not a sentimental starting point but the soil where theology roots its foundations. The knowledge about Mary acquired in treatises and encyclopedias must be nourished by prayer, liturgy, and communal living of faith. This methodological conviction permeates all episodes of the podcast.

The Path to Academic Mariology

After his theological studies, Daniel Afonso felt the need to deepen mariological study in a systematic way. Most of the available content was in Italian, confined to symposia and European faculties. This gap motivated him to create Locus Mariologicus and later the Mariology Podcast: the conviction that the Lusophone world is entitled to quality mariology. The mariological renewal of the 20th century, driven by the Second Vatican Council and figures like René Laurentin, Stefano De Fiores, and Ignace de la Potterie, produced a vast body of technical literature. Making this heritage accessible in Portuguese, without simplifying or distorting it, is the mission of Locus Mariologicus through its publications, postgraduate programs, and podcast.

The Providence That Leads to Mariology

The inaugural episode includes the testimony of a co-host, a missionary with a vow of poverty, who learned about the Locus Mariologicus postgraduate program from a priest at the Parish of São Miguel Arcanjo in Goiânia. “Father, if it’s paid, it’s paid. My God, how am I going to do this?” Providence, however, paved the way. This testimony illustrates a fundamental principle of the podcast: Mariology is not a specialty reserved for academics but a science that challenges and transforms everyone who encounters it.The experience of this missionary is representative of many mariological vocations: the encounter with serious reflection on Mary often arises through unexpected and humble paths, such as the offer of a leaflet in a parish corridor. Providence does not operate only in great ecclesial events but also in the discreet chain of people who pass a paper, send an email, recommend a course. The Mariology podcast wishes to be another link in this providential chain.

Mariology as a Theological Science

The theological core of this first episode is the definition of Mariology as a science. Reflection on Mary is not isolated piety nor disjointed devotional catechesis; it is a theological treatise with its own formal object and method. The material object of Mariology is the person of Mary of Nazareth, and the formal object is the set of relationships that link her to the mystery of Christ, the Holy Spirit, and the Church. The mariological method begins with Sacred Scripture, passes through the patristic and liturgical Tradition, and culminates in the Magisterium of the Church. Interpreting each piece of data in light of the Christian mystery as a whole, the Mariology podcast aims to follow this itinerary with rigor and love, without being captured by ideological polemics that fragment ecclesial debate.

Central Arguments of Mariology:

1. Christological: To speak of Mary is always to speak of Christ, for she is the Mother of the Incarnate Word, and her mission is inseparable from the mystery of the Incarnation. 2. Ecclesiological: Mary is the type and model of the Church, the one who perfectly fulfills what the community of the faithful is called to be. 3. Soteriological: Mary’s cooperation in the work of salvation reveals the logic of grace that elevates the creature without absorbing it.

A Mariology Without Parties

A distinctive feature of this inaugural episode is the rejection of partisanship. Daniel Afonso states that the Mariology of Locus Mariologicus does not position itself “within left or right-wing politics, but at the center where the Gospel is.” This is an epistemological stance before being pastoral: fidelity to the revealed data is non-negotiable, and post-conciliar renewal must be embraced with the criteria of the hermeneutic of continuity, as taught by the Magisterium. The Mariology podcast seeks to be a space of rigor, freedom, and intellectual charity.

Locus Mariologicus and the Postgraduate Program in Mariology

The Mariology podcast arises from the explicit request of students in the first cohort of the postgraduate program in Mariology. Among the students are Dina, Lorena, Branca, Maria Gilvânia, and Elaine, from different states of Brazil. Locus Mariologicus offers the only postgraduate program in Mariology in Portuguese, with a methodology that integrates biblical, patristic, dogmatic, and spiritual formation. More information about the postgraduate program can be found on the Locus Mariologicus portal.

A Mission of Ecclesial Service

The episode concludes with a prayer of surrender into Mary’s hands. The intention is clear: the Mariology podcast is not a personal project but a mission at the service of the Portuguese-speaking Church. “So that whoever clicks on this podcast twenty years from now may know who Locus Mariologicus is.” As recalled by the Second Vatican Council, Mariology is a constitutive dimension of the mystery of Christ and the Church (Cfr. Lumen Gentium, chap. VIII).
