Popular Marian piety: folk faith and inculturation

Religiosidade popular mariana: fé do povo e inculturação

Popular Marian Devotion, People’s Faith, and Inculturation

Popular Marian Devotion

Popular Marian devotion refers to the set of devotional practices that peoples have developed over centuries in honor of Mary: patronal festivals, processions, pilgrimages, ex-votos, folk songs, artistic representations, legends, and traditions. It is a genuine expression of the faith of God’s people.

Theological Value

The Document of Aparecida (CELAM, 2007) recognizes popular devotion as having a “*theological place*,” serving as a form of faith knowledge that complements academic theology. John Paul II described popular devotion as the “*evangelization of the poor*”: the simple have accessed the Gospel through Marian devotions, festivals, and pilgrimages.

Inculturation and Diversity

Popular Marian devotion takes on many diverse forms across cultures: Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico, Nossa Senhora Aparecida in Brazil, August Festivals in Portugal and Italy, and Romerías in Spain. Each cultural expression is an inculturation of the same mystery of Mary.

Purification and Authenticity

Paul VI, in his Exhortation *Marialis Cultus* (1974), calls for popular Marian devotion to be *purified*, not eliminated. Purification involves removing superstitions, excesses, magical elements, or cristological imbalances while always maintaining devotion to Mary in its proper place: ordered to Christ and rooted in the faith of the Church.Deepen your studies: Explore Mariology, Marian Theology, Apparitions of Mary, and a Postgraduate Degree in Mariology.—

Magisterium of the Church

> *”Pietas popularis mariana, si bene ordinata est, locum habet in vita Ecclesiae: in ea fides et devotio populi christiani ad Virginem Matrem exprimuntur.”* > > — Pope Paul VI, *Exhortation Ap. Marialis Cultus*, n. 24 (February 2, 1974)Literal Translation: Popular Marian piety, if well ordered, has a place in the life of the Church: it expresses the faith and devotion of the Christian people to the Virgin Mother.
