Portuguese Translation: Maria na espiritualidade clariana
The figure of Mary accompanied the vocational path of the Saint of Assisi until the end of her life. According to a significant testimony given in the canonization process, at the deathbed of Clara, Our Lady approached, inclining her face over her, whose life had been a radiant image of hers.
Saint Francis and Saint Clare together developed a mariology of kenosis, Mary as the model of Christ’s voluntary humility. Three characteristics:
Poverty: Mary not only tolerates but chooses poverty as befitting the Mother of the poor Son of God.
Virginity: Mary’s virginity is not contrary to motherhood, but is her most perfect condition.
Spiritual Maternity: Through the Son, who is the “Christ of the Poor,” Mary becomes the spiritual mother of all the poor.
Legacy
The Marian theology of Saint Francis and Saint Clara, developed in the 13th century, prefigures several themes that will be central to contemporary Marian teaching:
- Mary in solidarity with the poor, taken up by Pope Francis in Evangelii Gaudium
- Mary, Mother of Mercy, emphasized by Benedict XVI in Deus Caritas Est
- Mary as a model of consecrated virginity, developed in Vita Consecrata
