Pope Pius IX – Ineffabilis Deus and post-definition documents (1854-1878) – Papal Doctrine IV, nn. 269-322

The definition of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception in 1854 marked a turning point and a new beginning in the history of Catholic Marian theology. This page presents the Bull Ineffabilis Deus of Pope Pius IX, which proclaimed the Immaculate Conception, along with subsequent papal documents that received and developed the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception. It compiles the texts from Doctrina Pontificia IV (nn. 269-322) documenting the Magisterium on the Immaculate Conception between 1854 and 1878.

The Bull Ineffabilis Deus, issued on December 8, 1854, occupies numbers 269-302 of Doctrina Pontificia IV. This document is significant for defining the dogma of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary, one of the most important in Catholic theology.

“We declare, pronounce and define that the doctrine which holds that the most blessed Virgin Mary in the first instant of her conception was, by singular grace and privilege of Almighty God, in view of the merits of Jesus Christ, Savior of the human race, preserved free from all stain of original sin, is a doctrine divinely revealed and therefore must be firmly and constantly believed by all the faithful.”

Recepção Imediata:

Three days after the definition of the dogma, the Sacred Congregation of Indulgences published five decrees (nn. 303-307) granting special indulgences for the reception and devotion to the new dogma, demonstrating Pius IX’s desire that the dogma be widely celebrated and spread throughout the Church.

Aparições de Lourdes e Confirmação do Dogma:

In 1858, the apparitions of Our Lady in Lourdes, beginning on February 11th, provided a “Marian confirmation” of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception. The Virgin Herself, as revealed to Bernadette Soubirous, reaffirmed the dogmatic title granted by Pius IX four years earlier.
